Vertigo - Lesson 3 - A Brief History of Film Theory

This lesson focuses on film theory and it's development, from early Soviet cinema, German Expressionism of the 1920's, all the way up to modern film theory.

It is important that you understand the dominant forms of film theory throughout cinema history as it will enable you to contextualise your study of Hitchcock's film.

In your FM4 Exam you will not be expected to give a detailed history of film theory. You will however be expected to show an appreciation of film theory and how it has changed and evolved.

The handouts below provide a concise history of film theory and the different views that has came to prominence throughout the history of cinema.
